Bass Pro Shops — American Outdoor and Angling Heritage
The origins of Bass Pro Shops trace back to 1972 in Springfield, Missouri. Johnny Morris initiated the enterprise within a dedicated section for fishing tackle located inside his father’s liquor store. This modest beginning eventually transitioned into a national presence, largely fueled by the implementation of mail-order catalogs. These catalogs allowed Morris to distribute specialized equipment tailored for Black Bass angling to a wide audience across the country.
The retail approach shifted significantly during the 1980s with the development of large-scale destination stores. These locations were designed to function as more than simple retail outlets, incorporating features such as expansive aquariums, waterfalls, and wildlife museums. The corporate headquarters in Springfield, often referred to as "The Granddaddy of All Outdoor Stores," remains a primary example of this immersive format, housing themed restaurants and nature-focused exhibits alongside gear.
Strategic expansions and acquisitions have further defined the company’s trajectory within the outdoor industry. In 2017, Bass Pro Shops finalized the acquisition of Cabela’s, integrating a former competitor into its operations. Beyond retail, the company maintains a significant presence in the marine sector through the Tracker Marine Group. This division manufactures and distributes various fishing and recreational vessels under brands including Tracker, Nitro, and Mako.
