Cabela's — Evolution of the American Outfitter Since 1961
The origins of Cabela’s are rooted in the small-town setting of Sidney, Nebraska, where Dick and Jim Cabela began their venture in 1961. Their initial operations focused on a modest selection of hand-tied fishing flies offered via mail order. This humble start in the fly-fishing niche laid the groundwork for what would become an extensive outfitting operation.
The mail-order catalog served as the primary vehicle for growth, eventually becoming a staple resource for sportsmen across North America. These publications offered access to specialized equipment and tackle that were often unavailable in local shops. Among the items available to the angling community were various patterns of flies and specialized gear designed for outdoor pursuits.
The transition to physical retail saw the emergence of massive destination stores designed to offer an immersive environment. These facilities, often spanning hundreds of thousands of square feet, are characterized by large-scale taxidermy exhibits and expansive aquariums, integrating elements of the natural world into the retail space.
A significant shift in ownership occurred in 2017 when the company was acquired by Bass Pro Shops in a deal valued at 4.5 billion dollars. This merger joined two of the largest entities in the outdoor retail sector. While both brands continue to operate simultaneously, Cabela’s maintains a reputation for quality in the hunting equipment sector, though its history remains firmly connected to its early years as a provider of fishing tackle.
