Hex Baits
Hex Baits, Ltd., based in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, has a rich history dating back to 1937 when it commenced production in a converted old barn. Founded by Hector MacLean, the company initially specialized in crafting metal lures, drawing inspiration from the founder's name for its title, "Hex Baits."
Among its early creations were iconic offerings such as the CANOE BAIT, INDIAN WOBBLER, CANADIAN WOBBLER, and the CRAB WIGGLER. These lures quickly gained popularity among anglers, propelling the company's growth.
MacLean's craftsmanship expanded to include wooden fishing plugs, with the company selling around 400 annually by 1940. With the addition of new lure designs like PIKIE-MINNOWS, BASSOS, and SCOUTS, Hex Baits solidified its presence in the fishing industry.
The partnership with Peter Webster in the late 1940s further fueled production, leading to the introduction of plastic lures like the BUNTY and the 2" WHEELRITE. These innovations showcased Hex Baits' commitment to quality and innovation.
Notable among its plastic offerings was the HEX CANADA PLUG, featuring a unique design allowing anglers to infuse bait or scent inside the lure for added effectiveness. Additionally, the company produced wooden lures like the HEX SCOUT and BASSO PLUG, catering to a diverse range of fishing preferences.
Hex Baits' dedication to craftsmanship extended to its packaging, with distinctive box designs featuring vibrant imagery and detailed instructions. The brand's commitment to quality and innovation garnered widespread acclaim, with some of its boxed lures commanding significant value among collectors.
Despite facing challenges, including MacLean's passing in 1953 and rising production costs, Hex Baits continued to thrive until 1960 when production ceased. However, the legacy of its lures endured through subsequent ownership changes, including the transition to Johnson Lures, Ltd., in 1961.
Under various owners, including Robert Johnson, Don Green, and David Carr, the company maintained its reputation for producing high-quality fishing lures until the late 1970s. Although Hex Baits' production era came to a close, its contributions to the fishing industry and its enduring legacy continue to be cherished by anglers and collectors alike.
