Bay de Noc — Michigan's Iconic Jigging Spoons

Bay de Noc — Michigan's Iconic Jigging Spoons

The Bay de Noc Lure Company was established in 1955 in Gladstone, Michigan. Situated near Little Bay de Noc in an area recognized as the Walleye Capital of the World, the company was founded by two brothers who drew inspiration from Swedish vertical jigging techniques that had been practiced for over a century.

The Swedish Pimple is the most prominent design within the company’s history. This jigging spoon is constructed from solid brass and is characterized by its ability to produce an erratic action and flash during vertical retrieves. Though widely utilized in ice fishing, the design was also intended for open-water use. The manufacturing process involves stamping the brass, followed by electroplating, airbrush painting, and the application of a protective lacquer.

Among other models, the manufacturer’s selection has included several distinct spoons. The Do-Jigger was developed for spinning and trolling applications, while the Vingla featured a unique wing designed to provide a specific underwater movement. For anglers targeting lake trout and salmon, the catalog included the Laker Taker and Flute Spoons. These lures were typically rigged with Mustad hooks from Norway, utilizing a heavy-gauge wire for durability.

The company maintains its production facilities in Michigan, with operations currently based in Escanaba. From the initial casting and stamping to the final packaging, the entire process is handled in-house. This localized approach to manufacturing ensures that the lures retain the specific physical properties required for their traditional vertical presentations.
