Doctor Spoon and similar spoons

 Doctor Spoon and similar spoons

The legacy of the Doctor Spoon spans over ninety years, dating back to the 1930s when it first gained traction across North American waters. This lure is distinguished by its "2-in-1" double-action concept, a design that remains effective across a broad spectrum of retrieval speeds. Constructed from high-quality brass to ensure corrosion resistance and precise balance, the spoon features an elongated, slightly curved body tapering at both ends, resembling a willow leaf. Its mechanical signature combines wide-amplitude wobbles with erratic darts, mimicking the movement of a wounded baitfish.

The versatility of the Doctor Spoon stems from the ability to alter its action by reversing the attachment points for the line and hook. When the hook is secured to the wider end, the lure produces a sweeping, broad action suitable for mid-depth presentations or deeper, vibrating retrieves. Conversely, tying the line to the narrow end adapts the lure for deep, slow-speed trolling with a tight vibration profile. This same narrow-end configuration is also utilized for high-speed retrieves in shallow water, where it generates intense flashes.

Anglers often employ a "pumping" technique with the rod during a troll to trigger strikes from following fish. By rhythmically changing the speed through rod movement, the spoon is forced into erratic flashing patterns. While its application is broad, the Doctor Spoon and similar designs are frequently used when targeting northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, and large lake trout.
