GIL-O Spoon

GIL-O Spoon

The Origins of a Specialized Spoon. The GIL-O spoon represents a highly specialized engineering approach to the hydrodynamics of oscillating lures. Produced by GIL-O LURES, INC., which was based at 1438 Kennedy Road, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin 54729, USA, these lures were manufactured starting from the second half of the 1960s.

Design and Hydrodynamic Mechanics. The core value of the GIL-O lies in its unique stamped profile. The manufacturer spent years of research to achieve its specific action, which distinguishes it from standard spoons. The mechanics of the lure rely on a distinct dual-action movement. The head of the spoon performs sharp, transverse oscillations from side to side along a precisely calculated 180-degree arc. Simultaneously, the tail produces chaotic, sharp movements that mimic the panicked flight of a wounded or frightened baitfish. Additionally, the geometry of the stamp is designed to emit continuous, directed flashes in all four directions at once, providing a strong visual trigger even in turbid water conditions.

Models and Physical Specifications. The lures were manufactured in three classic finishes: Nickel, Copper, and Gold. The lineup is strictly categorized into four distinct sizes. The GIL-O No. 1 measures 2 inches (~ 5.1 cm), weighs 1/4 oz. (~ 7 g), and is equipped with a size No. 8 hook. The GIL-O No. 2 is 3 inches (~ 7.6 cm) in length, weighs 1/2 oz. (~ 14 g), and features a size No. 3 hook. The No. 3 model spans 4 inches (~ 10.2 cm), weighs 3/4 oz. (~ 21 g), and carries a size No. 1/0 hook. The largest model, GIL-O No. 4, measures 4 in. (~ 12.1 cm), weighs 1 oz. (~ 28.3 g), and is fitted with a size No. 3/0 hook.

Presentation and Tactical Applications. The geometry of the GIL-O allows it to be fished across various conditions in both freshwater and saltwater environments, including rivers, lakes, and coastal marine waters. It performs during slow and fast retrieves, as well as in deep or shallow zones. For deep-water presentations, a slow, steady retrieve is employed; the heavy body, particularly the 1-ounce model, tracks along a deep trajectory at low reel speeds while preserving the 180-degree head oscillation. Mid-water coverage is achieved with a medium retrieve speed. In shallow water or around obstacles such as snags, vegetation, and rocks, a fast retrieve is utilized; the angler starts retrieving immediately upon splashdown with the rod tip held high, allowing the wide profile of the spoon to quickly plane over hazards. When trolling under motor or oar power, the running depth is controlled entirely by the speed of the boat.

Target Species. The size range and action of the lure dictate its target applications. The smaller No. 1 and No. 2 models are suited for targeting large perch, trout, and small-to-medium pike at moderate depths. The larger No. 3 and No. 4 variations are designed for trophy northern pike, muskellunge, and large salmon. Featuring a robust 3/0 treble hook and weighing 28 grams, the No. 4 model is built to handle aggressive strikes from large predatory fish targeting a substantial, highly reflective prey profile.
