Dave's Ka Boom — The Storm Legacy Lures

Dave Storm, the son of the founder of Storm Lures, established Dave’s Lures, LLC in Norman, Oklahoma, to continue a family tradition under the KaBoom! Baits trademark. This independent venture was born after the original Storm company was acquired by the Rapala corporation. When the production of the HoT N Tot model was discontinued by the new owners, Dave Storm stepped in to provide anglers with familiar designs through his own manufacturing facility.

The production of KaBoom! Baits was a domestic American operation, with lures of that era bearing the "Made in the USA" mark. This period of independence for the company was relatively short-lived, as Dave Storm eventually sold the business to Normark, which is a subsidiary of Rapala. Despite the brief history of the brand, it remains a notable chapter for collectors and enthusiasts of Oklahoma-made fishing tackle.

Among the lures offered by the company was the Winning Streak, a model that directly evolved from the design principles of the Storm Hot-N-Tot. This crankbait featured a complex, profiled metal lip with the line tie eyelet mounted directly onto it. This specific construction was intended to create an erratic action and high-frequency vibration, allowing the lure to deflect off underwater obstacles like rocks and wood to minimize snags while targeting walleye, pike, and large perch.

Maintaining the performance of these metal-lipped lures often required a specific tuning process. Since the line tie was part of the lip, Dave Storm included instructions for manual balancing. If the lure pulled to one side during a high-speed retrieve or in heavy current, the angler was expected to carefully bend the eyelet in the opposite direction until the bait tracked perfectly straight, a technical detail well-known to those who frequented mid-depth structure and trolling runs.
