Museum Archive: Vintage Marathon (with sonic blades), 2/5oz fishing spoon #13898

Yellow scaled paint covers the body of this 2/5 oz (12 g) spoon, providing a textured backdrop for the central diamond-shaped holographic foil. Measuring 2 1/4" (6 cm) in length, this Marathon lure, product code 13898, features two small teardrop-shaped sonic blades attached to the rear split ring. These blades provide secondary flash and help obscure the large treble hook, an innovation from the Marathon Bait Company of Wisconsin, which produced gear between 1929 and 1979. The finish on this specimen shows light signs of use typical for a 4/5 condition rating, but the reflective properties remain sharp. Under certain lighting, the central diamond produces a strong ultraviolet response, shifting from silver to deep blue. The construction utilizes heavy-duty components designed for casting or trolling in various water conditions. Original hardware connects the sonic blades directly to the main body's anchor point alongside the hook.
