Museum Archive: Vintage Johnson Silver Minnow, 1/3oz silver fishing spoon #22929

Real silver plating coats this 2" (5 cm) spoon, providing a brighter, whiter flash underwater than standard chrome. This specific 1/3oz (9 g) Johnson Silver Minnow, identified by product code 22929, showcases the classic American-made construction that established Louis Johnson's design as a staple since 1920. The metal body features a thicker center section made from a copper and zinc alloy, a design choice intended to stabilize the lure as it rocks through a 270-degree arc during a retrieve. Collectors will appreciate the integrated metal weed guard protecting the single hook, a feature engineered to navigate heavy vegetation where predatory fish often hide. Unlike modern versions produced overseas, this specimen originates from the original USA production line. The silver finish remains bright, and the overall integrity of the hardware earns this piece a solid 4/5 condition rating. Because the rocking motion directs reflections downward and to the sides, it aligns with how fish typically strike from below. Anglers often pair this weedless spoon with a trailer, such as a pork rind, to mimic wounded baitfish without dampening the lure's inherent balance.
