Dardevle Imp

Dardevle Imp

The journey toward creating the Dardevle Imp began in 1906 when Lou Eppinger dedicated himself to finding the ideal shape for a metal lure. His first production spoon, the Osprey—renamed the Dardevle in 1918—already possessed a specific action that triggered predator strikes. However, while the original 28-gram lure was effective at depth, it sank too quickly for shallow flats and weed beds. This prompted the 1922 introduction of the Dardevle Imp, a more compact and faster-acting tool. The name "Imp" reflects its lineage from the larger "Devil" while highlighting its smaller profile and explosive movement in the water.

Identifying an authentic Eppinger lure involves recognizing specific historical markings. Until 1950, each lure was stamped with the text "Dardevle’s Imp." To combat the rising number of imitations, Eppinger introduced a protective mark in 1950: the iconic devil head logo. This stamp remains the primary confirmation that the spoon follows the original hydrodynamic calculations and manufacturing standards of the Eppinger company.

The technical performance of the Imp is largely defined by its brass construction. Measuring 5.4 cm and weighing 11.3 g, the brass body offers higher density than steel, allowing for a compact lure that maintains significant weight. This density results in low wind resistance and precise, long-distance casting even in adverse conditions. Furthermore, the material’s mass provides hydrodynamic inertia, helping the spoon maintain its depth during acceleration rather than rising to the surface, while remaining completely resistant to corrosion.

A key engineering feature of the Imp is its variable metal thickness. The lure is designed so that its edges are heavier and thicker than its center. This distribution acts as a counterbalance, allowing for wide oscillations without transitioning into a corkscrew spin, even in moderate currents. During a pause in the retrieve, this weight distribution causes the lure to flutter—falling side-to-side in a chaotic manner—which often serves as the primary trigger for pike strikes.

Tactical application of the Imp spans various freshwater species. For pike, a steady retrieve at a medium pace with short, one-to-two-second pauses along weed lines is often most effective. The 5.4 cm length also matches the typical profile of forage for large perch, especially when allowed to fall on the drop. Due to the ballistic properties of brass, the lure is capable of reaching distant surface-feeding asp or holding steady in the currents frequented by zander.

Rigging and tackle selection should complement the lure’s specific mechanics. While a classic treble hook provides high hook-up rates in open water, the proprietary double hook is designed to reduce snags when fishing through vegetation or submerged timber. To avoid dampening the lure's brass vibrations, a Medium-Light or Medium power rod with a Fast action is recommended, paired with flexible leaders such as titanium or fluorocarbon.
